Nike just did it: another huge win for kangaroos

The sports apparel company has announced that they will stop using kangaroo leather and will use a Nike-only, proprietary synthetic upper to make their new football boots in their popular Tiempo franchise. The brand has claimed this new material is a ‘better performance solution’ than kangaroo leather.

Ben Pearson, Country Director, World Animal Protection Australia, said:

“Nike’s commendable decision to shift away from kangaroo leather in favour of non-animal materials in its football boots is another exciting step in the right direction. We hope to see other brands like Adidas choose innovation over wildlife suffering.”

The cruelty-free football boots, the ‘Tiempo Legend Elite’ and the ‘Tiempo Premier’, will be available for purchase soon this year.

Nike’s decision to switch from K-Leather to a non-animal alternative comes a week after sporting giant Puma’s announcement of swapping K-Leather for the cruelty-free alternative K-Better in their football boots, which are massive wins for kangaroos.

And because of your tireless support, Dutch sports retailer, Intersport Netherlands, has become the latest sporting company to stop using kangaroo leather in their products.

World Animal Protection applauds this humane shift as more and more companies are realising the degree of suffering and cruelty involved in the commercial kangaroo hunt and no longer want to contribute to it.

It is high time sporting brands like Adidas, too, make the switch because killing kangaroos when there are innovative non-animal alternatives available is inexcusable.

Together, we can move more companies stop the cruel exploitation of kangaroos.
