Libearty is a bear sanctuary in Zarnesti, Romania. The sanctuary is run by World Animal Protection partner group Asociatia Milioane De Prieteni (AMP) who provide a safe home for bears rescued from captivity and poor quality zoos. Pictured; A bear in the snow at the sanctuary in January 2021.

This 34-year-old female bear was rescued by AMP from Galati Zoo after 34 years of captivity. The bear, now named ‘Tanya’, endured a lifetime behind bars, in a small concrete pen with nothing but a tiny dirty pool. She was in poor health, with severe arthritis in her legs and cataracts in her eyes. Thankfully, AMP negotiated her surrender with the owner of the zoo and she was brought to Libearty in June 2020. In July 2020, Tanya was released from quarantine into her new grassy enclosure. Pictured; Tanya enjoying her new outdoor space.

Bhoori, one of the Himalayan brown bears at Balkasar sanctuary, has been there since she was rescued in 2001. The bear sanctuary in Balkasar, Pakistan is run by our partner group the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC). All the bears at the sanctuary have been rescued from captivity where they are used in entertainment for baiting or dancing. At the sanctuary they get to live in natural enclosures and socialise with other bears.

Myra was found begging for food from tourists in the Saint Ana lake area with her two cubs Enoch and Arden. Seen as a nuisance and potentially dangerous, the cubs were destined to be shot and the mother relocated to another part of the country. Luckily, the Libearty sanctuary stepped in and saved the family. They were transported to their new home in July 2019.
