A step forward: Woolworths launches slower-growing chicken range

News

Australia’s largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has taken a step in the right direction for animal welfare as it announces the arrival of a range of slow-raised chicken.

Woolworths has introduced Slow Raised Whole Chicken, a range that uses chickens who grow at a much more natural rate than current fast-growing breeds, across many of their stores.

With Australia's average annual chicken consumption exceeding 47kg per person, about half of all meat eaten on average, this new addition will give meat consumers in Australia a higher-welfare option to choose from.

Rochelle Flood, Campaign Manager, World Animal Protection, said:

“We welcome the decision from Woolworths to introduce a range of slower-growing chickens into their stores. This move will help improve the welfare of chickens. Slower-growing chickens have far better health and welfare outcomes than the unnaturally fast-growing varieties currently available.”

Chickens are smart and sensitive animals who can recognise up to 100 faces. Unfortunately, fast-growing chicken breeds often suffer from various health issues as they are made to reach full size in just five to six short weeks. These health issues include heart and lung failure, muscle weakness, and broken bones as their bodies cannot keep up with such an unnatural growth rate.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement towards using slower-growing and healthier chickens in the food industry. This is a positive development that can benefit both the chickens and the people who consume them.

Slower-growing chickens have far better health and welfare outcomes

Woolworths’ decision to use slower-growing chickens is a great example of a company taking responsibility for the welfare of animals in their supply chain.

It is now time for other companies to follow their lead and commit to prioritising the health and well-being of their chickens. There is no reason to make chickens suffer when there is a better way. That’s why we’re calling on KFC Australia to sign the Better Chicken Commitment.

Together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future for both animals and humans alike.
