Nando’s commits to higher chicken welfare in the UK

News

Thanks to our UK supporters, Nando’s has signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment, a set of standards that will improve the welfare of millions of chickens

The new commitment to chicken welfare by Nando's follows our UK campaign last year in which over 36,000 people signed our petition calling on the food outlet to give chickens better lives.

The commitment means that by 2026 all the farms that supply Nando’s restaurants in the UK will move away from the use of fast-growing chicken breeds that suffer from painful heart, lung and bone problems. The chickens supplied to Nando's will also have more space to move around, more natural light and enrichment such as straw bales to explore and peck, so they can behave more naturally.

The announcement is part of a new commitment by Nando’s to improve both animal welfare and sustainability. As a result, millions of chickens supplying Nando’s will benefit from improved welfare each year.

With your support, we're calling on global companies to take a lead on animal welfare and ensure that any chickens that are being served at their restaurants are guaranteed a life worth living.

Our Change for Chicken campaign was launched in 2016 and we have since worked with KFC in the UK and Europe and Nando’s on improving the welfare of the chickens on farms that supply its restaurants. We will continue to offer our expertise to Nando's on how to make these changes and call on more companies and food outlets to do the same.
