As the Federal Election approaches, it presents a crucial opportunity to shape the future of animal welfare in Australia. This election could be a turning point for animals, including those trapped in one of the most barbaric trades in Australian history – live sheep export.
Our friends at the Australian Alliance for Animals have been working tirelessly to find out where parties and candidates stand on key animal welfare issues.
Here’s a nationwide scorecard they’ve produced based on their findings:
The political parties were scored on their positions on six key animal welfare policies, using a traffic light rating system:
- Protecting the live sheep export phase out
- Establishing a National Animal Welfare Commission
- Funding the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy
- Supporting animal welfare advocacy by expanding DGR status
- Promoting animal welfare in trade agreements
- Expanding the trophy hunting import ban
Each of these issues plays a significant role in ensuring the protection and well-being of animals across the country.
This Federal Election could be a turning point for animals and your vote has the power to ensure that we continue to make progress in protecting animals.
There is still time to tell your local Members of Parliament that animal welfare is a priority for you in this election.
