Endorsing the Plant Based Treaty to combat the climate emergency

There is a climate, ocean, biodiversity and animal welfare crisis, but the solutions are right before our eyes. The future is not just in our hands but on our plates. We need to phase out fossil fuels and transition to a plant-based diet.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation and biodiversity loss, and the expansion must be stopped. Urgent action is required at all levels, from individuals, to business to government. Eat plants, plant trees and endorse the Plant Based Treaty. 

Ending fossil fuels alone will not avoid climate breakdown, we must do both and we must do it now. 

The negotiation of a Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement would put food systems at the forefront of combating the climate crisis. Modeled on the popular Fossil Fuel Treaty, the Plant Based Treaty aims to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture and to promote a shift to healthier, sustainable plant-based diets.

To officially launch the Plant Based Treaty demonstrations and events were recently held at around 80 city halls across the world, asking councillors at the city level to endorse the Treaty. 

The Treaty would put food systems at the heart of combating the climate crisis, aiming to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture, to promote a shift to more healthy, sustainable plant-based diets and to actively reverse damage done to planetary functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity.
