Statement: Wild life not dead decoration
Tonight’s ABC Four Corners episode shines a light on the cruel ‘canned hunting’ industry in Africa.
World Animal Protection opposes animal cruelty. We strongly believe the rearing of wild animals for killing in the name of ‘entertainment’ must end.
Sadly, wildlife is a lucrative business. The breeding, rental and sale of lions and other wild animals are all part of trade chains. The trade supports activities such as ‘canned’ hunting, lion cub petting and lions walks.
Wild animals will suffer at every stage of this inherently cruel trade and are often kept in captive conditions that cannot meet their needs.
Nicola Beynon, Head of Campaigns, Australia at World Animal Protection, said, “The rearing and killing of lions and other wild animals in the name of ‘entertainment’ must end. There is no justification for such treatment of precious wildlife.
“Animals belong in the wild and should not prop up this sordid industry.”
World Animal Protection is encouraging tourists and travel companies to avoid animal cruelty in tourism. We want to warn tourists about the hidden cruelty behind lion petting and walking. Join thousands of Australians and over 100 tour operators worldwide who have pledged to support animal-friendly tourism.
