Copenhagen Fashion Week bans fur

Each year, millions of foxes, mink and other wild animals are cruelly farmed for their fur and slaughtered for the profits of fashion brands that have not progressed to more innovative and humane fashion alternatives. 

Thanks to your support, fashion shows and brands are increasingly choosing to transition away from cruelty, enacting sustainability, social and animal welfare policies to keep up with growing consumer demand for more sustainable, ethical and animal-friendly fashion.  

The Danish fashion week is following in the footsteps of other fashion weeks such as Melbourne, Stockholm and London, which have already removed fur from their runways. 

Gitte Buchhave, director of World Animal Protection DK said:  

"We are really happy that Copenhagen Fashion Week has included animal welfare in their sustainability policy. We have had a long dialogue with the team behind the fashion week, who have finally realized that fur is a thing of the past. It is a great victory for the animals when the fashion industry chooses to play a leading role in stopping the fashion industry's unethical exploitation of fur animals.” 

Collective Fashion Justice and World Animal Protection joined forces earlier this year to publish a report 'Cruelty is out of Fashion'. It lists designers such as Chanel, Gucci, Armani and Balenciaga, as well as fashion weeks such as London, Stockholm and now Copenhagen Fashion Week, which have banned fur. 

Emma Hakansson, author of the report and co-founder of Collective Fashion Justice, said:  

"It's really good to see that Copenhagen Fashion Week is using its influence to help change the industry. It is high time that fur from wild animals is removed from the catwalk, both for the sake of the animals, but also for public health and the planet. Other fashion weeks should follow Copenhagen's example.”  

To avoid becoming 'out of fashion', New York, Milan and Paris fashion week organisers need to keep up with other events, consumer expectations and the brands they exist to celebrate.
